We are so excited to open the doors to our homestead and share with you some of the things we have learned over the years. Our hope is that you will be able to take some of the skills we have learned and utilize them wherever you might live, whether it is in a city apartment, in the suburbs, or on acres of land in the countryside.

Homesteading is our choice for our family to be more connected with our surroundings by learning to live off the land as much as possible. We understand that homesteading is not for everyone, but we believe that if we all take small steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle we can make the world a better place.

You’ll hear us use the term The Homesteading Mindset often in this course. To us, a homesteading mindset means being aware of how we are living in connection with the world around us. A major part of that is paying attention to the resources we have available to us. We value finding sustainable resources that we can trust.

We also view our energy as a resource. There are only so many hours in a day and on a homestead there are many tasks to complete, so a part of the homesteading mindset is looking for the easiest and most effective method.

The Homesteading Mindset breaks free from the “one-time use” mindset. We do what we can to repurpose and recycle as many of our resources as possible– everything from plastic containers to the manure from our goats.

Maybe the most important aspect of The Homesteading Mindset is community and family. While we may live in a secluded part of the country, we are by no means secluded from our community. We value and cultivate the relationships we have with those who live close to our homestead. It's not feasible for one family to gather and grow all of the resources needed for the year, so we depend on each other by helping, sharing, and bartering.

We are excited for you to see some of the many methods we use to make our homestead sustainable, and we hope you are able to adapt what we do to fit your environment, making your home a little more like a homestead.
